Design and Construction of Double-Curved, Mechanically or Pneumatically Prestressed Membrane Structures

Membrane structures are double-curved shell structures, which can only be stressed by tensile forces and stabilized by mechanical or pneumatical prestress. Like cable meshes, the membrane structures are kinematical, which results in an almost unlimited variety of shapes on the one hand, and on the other hand, significant difficulties may occur, so it is necessary to take into account some special conditions for the calculation of such structures.

This thesis describes the problems of the design and construction, and presents the possibilities for the structural analysis. The objective is the calculation of a pneumatically prestressed roof consisting of ETFE cushions, which is installed above the inner courtyard of the Rheinpark-Metropole park in Cologne, Germany, which is built at the same time when the thesis is written.

"I would like to thank you for allowing me to use your software products for my thesis. I could take advantage of RSTAB for the calculation of a beam trussed with sag rods."
