Study on Traditional Craftsmanship with Decorative Timber Framed Structures

This master thesis utilizes RFEM to evaluate the structural behavior of traditional timber framed structures, mainly used for ornamental purposes in the coffered ceiling of churches and historical buildings. Several model types with members only, but also with solids were developed to deeply understand the load transfer, strength, and deformation of the structural system.

The conclusions drawn in the thesis point out that such ornamental structures are cost-efficient in their transport and easy to build; it requires the digital design phase based on the CNC and digital fabrication.
From the structural point of view, they are very powerful structures, while the required amount of timber in relation to the load-bearing capacity is low, making them affordable with a market price.
