Numerical Analysis of Wind Flows in Urban Space for Optimal Integration of Small Wind Power Plants

Environmental emergencies, climate change, renewable energies: These terms are omnipresent these days and indicate an urgent need for the generation of sustainable forms of energy or the expansion and widespread integration of existing and proven green energy producers. Above all, it would be desirable to use buildings in urban areas as energy producers, in view of their high land and energy consumption.

Since solar energy has already been adequately investigated and is also used, for example, in the form of photovoltaic panels as façade elements and as solar roof systems, the present work deals with wind energy. Intensive research is also being performed in this area. However, the topic of wind remains a complex matter in all respects. Primarily, the numerical prediction and the wind flow behavior, with all their influences, require special attention.

This complexity and the most important properties were worked out in this master’s thesis in order to analyze different passage-like arrangements of two building complexes with regard to the wind velocities. Since the described topic cannot necessarily be placed in the context of common structural engineering, the bridge to civil engineering is built using the RWIND Simulation program by the Dlubal company. This program for numerical flow simulation was developed for the determination of wind loads for complex structures and buildings and is mainly used for these purposes. In the aforementioned variant analysis, this program is used to analyze the wind behavior within the building arrangements.
