Powerful Features in Steel Design Add-on

Using the Steel Design add-on, you can check the load-bearing capacity, stability, and serviceability of steel structures.

    Intuitive Design of Steel Structures

Design and verify steel structures – including stability analysis of steel member structures in the ultimate limit state or cross-section resistance design.

    • Tension Design Considering Reduced Cross-Sectional Area

The program allows for easy consideration of cross-sectional reduction due to bolt holes in tension-loaded members.

    • Design Checks for General RSECTION Cross-Sections

The Steel Design add-on helps you to, among other things, design general cross-sections that are not predefined in the cross-section library. You can select from various design formats depending on the design standard you have used. One of them is, for example, the equivalent stress analysis.

    • Consideration of Internal Forces from Calculation with Torsional Warping

The Torsional Warping (7 DOF) add-on offers you a wide range of new options. For example, you can perform the calculation of member structures in RFEM and RSTAB, taking into account the cross-section warping.

      • Torsional Warping (7 DOF)
    • Graphical Display of Mode Shape for Lateral-Torsional Buckling Analysis

The eigenvalue solver in the program determines the critical load factor for stability analysis and displays the governing mode shape. It supports lateral-torsional buckling analysis and the general method according to EN 1993‑1‑1, 6.3.4.

Dialog box for entering local cross-section reductions in steel design for tension check, specifying reductions as an absolute value or percentage.
Tabular and graphical view of cross-section properties and stress distribution for designing custom cross-sections following EN 1993-1-5 standards.
Analysis of cross-section warping in steel design with internal forces from warping torsion.
Graphical visualization of critical mode shape for lateral-torsional buckling in structural analysis.

Graphical Input and Check of Defined Nodal Supports and Effective Lengths for Stability Analysis

Using the Steel Design add-on, you can efficiently perform stability analysis, where the definition of effective lengths plays a crucial role. In the input dialog box, you define nodal supports and effective length factors required for the calculations.

For easy documentation and transparent checks, you can display the nodal supports and the resulting segments with the corresponding effective length factors directly in the RFEM/RSTAB work window. This ensures clear visualization and facilitates the control of the input data.

    More Information
Arrangement of nodal supports to determine buckling lengths for stability analyses in structural analyses.

    Stability Analysis of Cold-Formed Sections

In the Steel Design add-on, you can perform stability design checks of cold-formed RSECTION cross-sections, as well as the library sections with intermediate stiffeners (Sigma sections, and so on) according to EN 1993-1-3.

The Add-On supports the comprehensive analysis and calculation of critical loads that can lead to instability phenomena such as buckling or lateral-torsional buckling. Here, not only the influence of individual stiffeners but also their position and distribution within the profile is considered. Additionally, alternative calculation methods can be applied if necessary to verify stability under special conditions such as high-temperature loads or extraordinary geometries.

    More Information
Stability analysis of a cold-formed Sigma-section according to EN 1993-1-3.

    Serviceability

The add-on provides a comprehensive serviceability design of steel structures, in particular the calculation of deflections, which are compared with standard-compliant or manually adjusted limit values. This allows for precamber to be taken into account in the deflection analysis. Depending on the type of design situation, different limit values can be defined, and you can manually adjust reference lengths and segmentations.

The calculation can be performed for both the initial and the deformed structural system. You can also perform additional detailed checks, such as the limitation of web breathing according to EN 1993-2, depending on the selected design standard.

RFEM/RSTAB provides a graphical display of the results, including the ratio of deformation to the limit values. The output is fully integrated in the RFEM/RSTAB printout report, which allows for clear and efficient documentation.

    More Information
Defining support conditions for member sets based on EN 1993-1-1 standards with visual aids displaying precise adjustments.

Output of Temperature-Time Diagram for Gas and Steel Temperatures

As part of the fire resistance design, the component temperature governing at the time of design is automatically determined based on the input data. The add-on allows you to visualize the temperature distribution as a function of time. Using the temperature-time diagram display, you can track the development of the gas and steel temperatures, which enables a precise analysis of the thermal load and the behavior of the structural components in the event of a fire.

    More Information
The diagram illustrates the temperature evolution of a component in fire resistance for evaluating steel structure safety.

Dialog box for configuring fire resistance settings in steel design, featuring options for critical temperatures and fire exposure.

Considering Hot-Dip Galvanizing of Structural Components for Steel Temperature Determination

The add-on allows for automatic determination of the component temperature, considering hot-dip galvanizing. It provides the option of user-defined adjustment of the coefficients used for temperature determination.

Edit Member dialog box focusing on deflection and design support settings for precise structural member control.

Manual Adjustment of Reference Lengths and Segmentation by Direction

The add-on allows you to manually define reference lengths and segments for the calculation of the deflection limit value, which can be adjusted independently of the direction.

Visualization of overlapping steel design results according to different design checks.

    Result Filter by Limit State

The add-on provides the option of displaying design checks directly in tables or graphically. Extensive filter options allow for the targeted selection of the desired design checks, both by limit state and by design type. These filter functions facilitate the analysis and evaluation of the results by allowing for precise focusing on relevant design checks.
