The mountain Torghatten towers over the Norwegian Scenic Route along the Helgeland coast as a special attraction. The mountain is known both nationally and internationally, with its 258 metres above sea level and a distinctive hole running through it. The service station at Torghatten features sanitary facilities and exhibition space. The facility is covered by a timber roof structure that, which attracts attention due to its unusual shape and also posed challenges.
The entire structure, apart from the foundation, consists of solid timber beams laid in interlocking layers, following the traditional Norwegian "lafteverk" technique. This approach required the highest precision in assembling the components due to their irregular shapes. No glue was used, but rather mechanical screw connections to meet further sustainability requirements.
To implement this exciting project, Dlubal customer Bollinger+Grohmann used the FEA software RFEM for a detailed structural analysis. Parametric design was applied from the preliminary design phase through to the development of detailed construction drawings.
