Stability Behavior of Steel Mesh Domes Prone to Imperfections

In 1992, the community of Halstenbek near Hamburg, Germany, decided to build a sport hall. It was agreed to design a double curved and transparent steel mesh dome. The supporting structure collapsed already during its mounting. In 1998, only a few weeks before it should be opened, it collapsed again. The present thesis analyzes the second collapse of the dome of Halstenbek.

Based on different geometric, nonlinear calculations using the CAD program RSTAB, the thesis wants to find out if the second dome collapse could have been mathematically predictable.

Finally, it was proved in the thesis that the dome would also have been collapsed to a later point in time, even in case of a correct mounting if the outdoor temperature had been higher.
