Stiffness Calculation of Lightweight Timber Multi-Story Buildings

In the article "Multi-Storey Timber-Frame Building" of Tunis Hoeskstra from 2012 evaluates the theoretical stiffness of a lightweight wall with a structural panel utilizing the detailed analysis of all the factors defined in the previous section. Eurocode 5 (UNE‑EN 1995‑1‑1:2016, Section 9.2.4.1, Paragraph 4) indicates that the wall offset resistance must be determined by the testing according to the European Norm EN 594 or by a calculation. Without the necessary data to be able to do it by means of a calculation for the panels that are the object of this work, the tests presented in this work have been proposed to determine the stiffness of the panels.

The standard regulation (EN‑594:2011) is not applicable to this case since the coatings are not really structural panels. However, the behavior of the set is similar, as we have already seen. I have tried to follow this European Standard as much as possible, but the procedures from the American Standard ASTM E72 (Standard Test Methods of Conducting Strength Tests of Panels for Building Construction) have also been included. It is necessary to take into account that in both tests, the test is carried out until the sample failure occurs. In the tests that have been proposed in this work, as already mentioned in the goals, the deformation limitation is a priority criterion, and it is not necessary to make the samples to failure to meet the main goal. However, it would be interesting in subsequent investigations to propose the tests as indicated by these standards in order to develop a more complete behavior curve of the tested panels.

"For my master's thesis, it has been very helpful to have the Dlubal programs, since I have carried out a couple of tests with the mixed thatched walls in my work, calculating their stiffness, and I have modeled a building using the spring coefficient obtained by the test."
