Local Buckling of Members per the ADM 2015

If a member with an aluminum cross-section consisting of slender elements is used, there is the possibility of failure due to local buckling of the flanges or webs before the member reaches its full strength. There are three options available in the RF-/ALUMINUM ADM add-on module to determine the nominal flexural strength for the limit state local buckling Mnlb from Section F.3 of the 2015 Aluminum Design Manual. These three methods include the sections F.3.1 'Weighted Average Method', F.3.2 'Direct Strength Method' and F.3.3 'Limit Elements' Method.

All three methods described in section F.3 'Local Buckling' have defined the local buckling limit state in relation to B.5.4 and B.5.5. These sections describe the determination of the strength of elements under compression only and of elements under bending pressure. In addition to the width-thickness ratio b/t, the local buckling stability depends on whether the element is supported on one edge or on both edges or not.

Clause F.3.1, F.3.2 and F.3.3 provide different options for calculating the local buckling stability. The 'Direct Strength Method' is the most accurate and comprehensive method. However, the Weighted Average Method is the default option in the RF-/ALUMINUM ADM detail settings because it is used in a majority of the ADM example problems. However, the user can switch to another method at any time.
