PC Recognized as Virtual Machine

My Surface Book is recognized as a "Hyper V" virtual machine, so my local license does not work. What can I do?

Answer:

Local licenses (USB dongle, local softlock) cannot be used on virtual machines. For reasons that have not yet been clarified, some computers, mainly Microsoft Surface Books, may be incorrectly identified as virtual machines.

If you can rule out that you are using virtualization software, you can go to your registry editor under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Guest\Parameters\VirtualMachineId

and/or

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Guest\Parameters\VirtualMachineId

and rename the entry "VirtualMachineId".

Then, restart your PC.
