Structural Analysis of Historical Bridge Structure (Sýkora Bridge in Ostrava) Using Numerical Modeling

The goal of the diploma thesis is to determine the reliability of the Miloš Sýkora bridge in Ostrava, which was built in 1912-14. The original bridge structure is loaded with the assumed period load and the structure reliability is determined by the allowable stress design method. At the same time, loading according to the currently valid standards is applied to the reconstructed structure and the reliability of the structure is determined according the ultimate limit state method. The RFEM program was used for the structural analysis.

The main part of the diploma thesis is the assessment of the bridge structure reliability according to the currently valid standards. The model of the load-bearing structure created in RFEM was loaded according to the currently valid standard. The design check was performed using the limit state method. When determining the safety of the structure, changes in the load-bearing structure executed during the reconstructions, were also considered.

The lowest load-bearing capacity was achieved again by the longitudinal members, which satisfied the check only with consideration of a composite slab added to the bridge deck during the reconstruction. The reliability of the load-bearing structural elements has been verified. All elements satisfied requirements of the ultimate limit state method, many of them with a considerable reserve of load-bearing capacity.
