Stainless Steel Gas Container, Germany

For an existing gas container, the design temperature was to be increased from 380 °C to 514 °C. Arcus Engineering Solutions was responsible for the feasibility study and used RFEM for the structural analysis and design.

Structure
The gas container has dimensions of W × D × H = 1.58 m × 1.58 m × 6.00 m (5.18 ft × 5.18 ft × 19.69 ft) and is constructed from 5 mm (0.2 in) thick plates and folded sheet metal profiles made of 16Mo3 (1.5415) steel. It has a DN 700 connection flange at the inlet and a DN 900 connection flange at the outlet. Both connection flanges are free of load.

Inside the container, there are four planes for internal components. Catalyst modules (approx. 400 kg/plane) are installed on each plane. The planes are accessible from one side through an opening measuring approx. 0.70 m × 1.58 m (2.30 ft × 5.18 ft), which is closed with a cover. The gas container stands cantilevered on four columns.

Since the design temperature is to be increased from 380 °C to 514 °C, the structural component had to be redesigned.

Calculation in RFEM
In addition to the self-weight and temperature, an internal container pressure of 110 mbar was assumed. The engineers at Arcus Engineering Solutions performed stability, stress, and strain analyses. In the second-order analysis, they accounted for nonlinear material behavior.

The result of the design according to Eurocode 3 was that the stainless steel gas container can withstand the higher temperatures.
