Powerful Features in Timber Design Add-on

With the Timber Design add-on, you can efficiently perform ultimate and serviceability design of timber structures.

    Intuitive Design of Timber Structures

Design and verify timber structures – including resistance design and stability analysis of beam and plate structures in the ultimate limit state.

    • Transversal Compression Stiffening Elements for Design Supports

This add-on allows you to define fully threaded screws as transversal compression stiffening elements for the "Compression Perpendicular to Grain" design in Design Supports. It analyzes the pressing-in and buckling of the bolts, while also checking the design shear resistance in the plane of the screw tip.

    • Manual Adjustment of Reference Lengths and Segmentation by Direction

The Timber Design add-on allows manual adjustment of reference lengths and segmentation based on direction. You can individually define the reference lengths considered in the deflection limit value calculation and specify the segments to be checked, depending on the direction. Design supports can be defined at the intermediate nodes of a member and assigned to the respective direction for deformation analysis. Additionally, for each direction and segment, a precamber can be defined.

    • Graphical Display of Mode Shape for Lateral-Torsional Buckling Analysis

The Timber Design add-on provides a graphical display of the mode shape for lateral-torsional buckling analysis. After using the eigenvalue solver to determine the critical load factor in the stability analysis, you can visualize the governing mode shape of the object being designed. The eigenvalue solver is available for lateral-torsional buckling analysis, depending on the design standard applied.

    • Design of Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL) Members According to EN 1995-1-1

With this add-on, you can design members using the "Laminated Veneer Lumber" material type. Available manufacturers include Pollmeier (Baubuche), Metsä (Kerto LVL), STEICO, and Stora Enso.

Considering Different Effective Lengths in Fire Resistance Design

Using the Timber Design add-on, alternative equivalent member lengths can be defined for fire conditions to account for lateral restraints of a structure for fire resistance. This provides a more realistic evaluation of the effective lengths under fire conditions, resulting in a more precise design of the structure.

    More Information
Explanation of effective length adjustment for fire protection in timber structures focusing on lateral supports.

Design of Tapered and Curved Members

With the Timber Design add-on, you can consider cut-to-grain angles, transversal tension stresses, and volume-dependent curvature radii for tapered and curved members. When designing cut-to-grain angles, the strength in bending tension or bending compression is adjusted accordingly.

To ensure the stability analysis, even with the equivalent member method, you can specify the height for determining the buckling and warping lengths at a distance of 0.65 x h from the actual design point. This allows for a precise and comprehensive calculation of curved and tapered members.

    More Information
Tapered timber girder showing geometric properties and structural design in engineering.

Support Design for Internal and External Supports

This add-on allows you to perform support design at any points for loads in the y- and z-direction of the cross-section. You can differentiate between internal and external supports.

The factor kc,90 for compression perpendicular to the grain can be user-defined (for example, 1.75 for glued laminated timber). If allowable, the support length is automatically increased according to the standard specifications, resulting in a more efficient design check – without any additional effort.

    More Information
Dialog box showing support compression settings for timber design, including options for load points in y and z directions and factor adjustments.

    Considering Notch

This add-on allows you to take into account initial, internal, or end notches of a beam using member section reductions. The reduction of the beam is included in the calculation of the supporting capacity, while it has no effect on the stiffness. This feature allows for precise adjustment of the calculations to the actual geometry of the beam.

    More Information
Dialog for defining cross-section reductions in timber beam design to manage notches effectively.

What other features would you expect?

The Timber Design add-on is constantly being developed and expanded with new features. Discover what else it can provide and take your projects to a new level!

Results of Fire Resistance Design | EN 1995

    Fire Resistance Design

The add-on allows for flexible definition of the charring time and takes into account different effective lengths in the fire resistance design. It provides optional calculation with or without layer adhesion for cross-laminated timber and allows for design of the compression perpendicular to the grain. The results are displayed graphically and integrated into the printout report.

Timber design showing spring parameter and eccentricity definition with lateral-torsional restraints.

Considering Location of Lateral Intermediate Supports

The “Timber Design” add-on for RSTAB 9 allows for precise consideration of the position of lateral-torsional bracing in timber structures. In downwind conditions, topside lateral-torsional bracings are not applied to reduce the effective lengths and lateral-torsional buckling lengths, which ensures a precise calculation of the structural stability.

    Torsion in Strength Configuration

Torsional Design According to US Standard ANSI/AWC NDS

The add-on allows for torsion design according to the US standard ANSI/AWC NDS. For torsion, you can decide whether the design is performed, whether further design checks are allowed if the shear stress does not exceed the limit value, or whether the torsion is designed according to the Timber Construction Manual, Section 4.6, or ignored.
