Strength and Stability

The Timber Design add-on is right for you! It allows you to perform the cross-section resistance design and stability analysis of timber member and plate structures in the ultimate limit state.

  • You can select from a wide range of cross-sections, such as rectangular sections, square sections, T‑sections, circular sections, built-up cross-sections, irregular parametric cross-sections, and many others (suitability for design depends on the selected standard).
  • The add-on allows for the design of cross-laminated timber (CLT), as well as timber materials and laminated veneer lumber according to EC 5.
  • You can also design tapered and curved members, whereby the applied design method depends on the selected standard.
  • It is possible to adjust the essential design factors and standard parameters.
  • The software provides flexibility due to detailed setting options for basis and extent of calculations.
  • The fast and clear results output allows for an immediate overview of the result distribution right after the design.
  • The detailed output of the design results and essential formulas provides you with a comprehensible and verifiable result path.
  • Numerical results are clearly arranged in windows, including the option to display them graphically in the model.
  • Seamless integration of the results into the RFEM/RSTAB printout report

Your Advantages

  • Support pressure design
  • Design of special shapes, such as curved and arched members, including stability aspects
  • Possibility to define buckling restraints and lateral-torsional bracing differently for fire resistance design and for a reversed moment distribution, for example, for downwind
  • Consideration of notches
  • Consideration of system strength via ksys
  • Traceability of all design checks in clear formulas
  • Optional stability design using an eigenvalue analysis fully integrated into the design checks (Mcr calculation)
  • Optional combination with the Warping Torsion (7 DOF) add-on

Cross-Section Resistance Features

The program performs the calculations of tension, compression, bending, shear, torsion, and combined internal forces. There is and option to design the compression perpendicular to the grain on the end and intermediate supports with (according to EC 5) and without reinforcement elements (fully threaded screws).

The higher strength for similar components close to each other is taken into account by the ksys factor according to EN 1995‑1‑1, 6.6(1)‑(3).

Stability Analysis

The program offers a wide range of features, including internal force calculation, compressive design, identification of the strong axis, shear force reduction, and the design of curved members. You can also increase shear resistance, apply code-dependent settings, and view clear results with detailed cost information.

The system allows for alternative consideration of all effects for the stability analysis when determining internal forces in RSTAB (a second-order analysis, imperfections, stiffness reduction, possibly in combination with the Torsional Warping [7 DOF] add-on).

Input

Timber Design is seamlessly integrated into the main programs and automatically takes into account the structure and the available calculation results. Additional data for the timber design, such as effective lengths, cross-section reductions, or design parameters, can be assigned to the objects to be designed. You can use the [Select] function, available at many places of the program,in order to select the elements graphically.

Results

After successfully completing the design, you can benefit from the facilitated work phase. The program does many processes for you. The design checks performed are listed in clearly arranged tables, including all details of the results. Due to the clearly presented design formulas, you can follow the results without any problems. There are no "black-box" effects here.
