Subsequent Modeling of Downstand Beam Under Existing Floor

When you perform the subsequent modeling of a beam under an existing floor, the first issues that arise are which forces should be transferred between the downstand beam and the floor, and whether a composite effect is the goal.

In this case, the floor should rest on the downstand beam without a composite.

Accordingly, only vertical compressive forces are transferred from the downstand beam to the floor (Image 01).

Since the "Rib" member type is out of the question due to the non-existent composite, you have to assign the "Beam" member type to the downstand beam.

The "Line Release" function is useful to implement the condition that only compressive forces should be transferred in the Z-direction. In this case, all forces and moments must be activated—that is, released—in the "New Line Release Type" dialog box. In addition, the "Fixed if positive vz" nonlinearity must be defined for uz (Image 02).

You should select the line of the member within the corresponding area as a line to be released, and the corresponding surface as a released object.
