Technology Meets Communication

Hedi is 28 years old, studied structural engineering, and now works at Dlubal Software in Munich. But not on a construction site. And not in traditional structural design either. Instead, he works in technical sales. He invites you to accompany him for a day at work.

Structural engineer in sales: Sounds unusual at first? It did to Hedi, too.

“I thought sales meant selling,” he says looking back. “Today I know that sales means understanding.”

Because what he does today is much more than offering a product. As a sales engineer, Hedi is the link between technology and people. He talks to customers about real projects, understands their challenges and requirements – and works with them to develop the right solution. Always individual, always close at hand, always technically sound.

No Typical Day

And that's exactly what makes it so appealing

Hedi's workday starts early. He is usually in the office by eight o'clock. He begins with structured planning: reading emails, prioritizing tasks, and preparing appointments. Then, things get dynamic. His calendar fills up with online meetings, demos, technical consultations, and discussions with potential and existing customers. In between, he finds time for coffee, chatting with the team, and lunch together in the office — a real highlight of his day.

“Every request is different. No two conversations are the same. That's challenging, and it's exactly what I love about it.”

This aspect is precisely what makes the job so exciting for him: no standard procedures, but real thinking, listening, and translating. It's not about selling software; it's about positioning it in a solution-oriented way.

  • Not: What does the Eurocode say?
  • But: What do you need for your project? How do you think as a user? How can we map that well technically and economically?

Sales as Career Path for Technicians

Hedi never imagined he would end up as a sales engineer, which is precisely why it has been such a rewarding experience. Technical sales allows him to apply his expertise without working exclusively in an operational role. He advises, helps develop solutions, understands interrelationships, and contributes to the success of the company.

Another benefit is the salary. As a sales engineer, Hedi receives a sales commission. The better he understands customers and the more targeted the solutions he offers, the more his efforts pay off. Performance is recognized and rewarded here.

"I generate revenue not by pushing sales, but by understanding. And that feels right."

What Makes Difference: Team

In addition to the professional challenge, the work environment also plays a major role for Hedi. "I enjoy coming to the office every day. We work together not only professionally, but also as friends." The Munich location is technically well-equipped, the processes are well-established, and yet the atmosphere is still informal. Whether answering questions, taking lunch breaks together, or discussing ongoing projects, teamwork and support are not just empty words here—they are a reality.
