Kuhdammbrücke Bridge in Wustermark, Germany

This customer project of the Dlubal customer VIC Planen und Beraten GmbH involves widening an existing tied arch bridge from 4.5 m (14.8 ft) to 8 m (26.2 ft) of roadway width. This measure was necessary as part of the development of the Wustermark freight transport center, west of the German capital Berlin, into a large interregional transit hub.

To achieve the widening of the roadway, the existing main components were reinforced accordingly. The main structure consists of two tied arches with rigidly connected reinforcing girders and hangers, which are connected to each other by secondary beams and an orthotropic deck slab.

The span length of the arches is 76.60 m (251.3 ft), and the distance between the arch planes was increased to 13.04 m (42.8 ft) during the widening. To model a realistic hanger length, the hangers were connected between the lower edge of the arch and the centroidal axis of the arch, as well as between the upper edge of the reinforcing girder and the centroidal axis of the reinforcing girder, using ideal coupling members.

In addition to the structural analysis of the structure, the vibration behavior of the hangers was analyzed. The analysis showed that the center hangers had to be equipped with vibration dampers in order to meet the current serviceability requirements.

The design checks of the structure were performed by the Dlubal's customer VIC Planen und Beraten GmbH using the FEA software RFEM.
