Extension of Cinema Hall and Passage Roofing at Westfield Černý Most in Prague, Czech Republic

Project of the completion and structural modifications of the “Westfield Černý Most” shopping mall in Prague. This part of the project includes the extension of cinema halls at the level of the existing roof parking lot and the passage roofing with an attic height of 16.2 m (53.15 ft). The structural solution was developed by a Dlubal customer, OBERMEYER HELIKA a.s.

About Project

The project of reconstruction and expansion of the Westfield Černý Most shopping mall in Prague includes the extension of the northern part of the building with new cinema halls and additional structures at the roof level. The height of the attic reaches +16.2 m (53.15 ft). The structure also includes a foyer, consisting of a composite sheet metal and concrete slab, with a load-bearing system combining steel and reinforced concrete elements. The bonding is carried out using shooting studs.

Structural Technical Solution

The supporting structure of the cinema hall roof is designed as a multi-level system of truss and solid wall elements. One part consists of beams, trusses, and purlins, while in the other part, the existing steel roof is suspended on a new truss. The vertical supporting structures use rolled steel sections, which are reinforced to withstand increased loads, often in the form of truss columns made of closed hollow sections. The reinforcement also applies to the foundations, which are designed using a separate structural analysis. In some cases, the new columns are placed on the existing structure, which had to be supported and reinforced as well. In selected locations, the existing structure is also suspended from the new steel structure, which is raised by 20 mm (0.79 in).

The foyer structure consists of a composite sheet metal and concrete slab with a thickness of 150 mm (5.91 in). The load-bearing elements consist mainly of composite steel joists. The beams are embedded in the reinforced concrete slab. The steel and concrete elements are connected using shooting studs.

The transverse and longitudinal stability of the structure is ensured by a combination of frame connections (frame joints tapered on open sections, firmly connected bottom and top chords on truss girders), steel truss bracing in the walls and roof plane, and, above all, fixed truss columns and solid columns.

The analysis of the steel structure and design of steel elements were carried out in RFEM.
