Hervester Bridge No. 423 Across the Wesel-Datteln Canal

The new bridge replaces the existing Hervester Bridge No. 423, which had been classified as derelict. After assembly on the bank, it was pushed over the Wesel-Datteln Canal step by step.

Dlubal customer grbv Ingenieure im Bauwesen GmbH & Co. KG from Hannover was in charge of the planning and structural design in the draft stage. grbv used the structural frame analysis program RSTAB for the structural analysis. The compilation of the tender documents marked the end of the planning task.

Structure

As an alternative to a new construction, lifting the existing bridge by 1 ft was evaluated earlier to compensate for soil settlements. However, this idea was finally discarded.

The new bridge construction in parallel position is a tied arch bridge with an orthotropic roadway slab. The bridge has a steel tonnage of 595 tons; the span is 242 ft.

The two arches have a rise of about 39 ft and consist of closed steel boxes. The arches are straight at the end and have the shape of a quadratic parabola in the center. The bridge, with a width of 50 ft, offers space for two lanes as well as a sidewalk and cycle route.
