Steel Construction for 360° Panorama

The 100-year-old gasometer in Pforzheim, Germany, was threatened with demolition.

The steel structure of the former gas storage facility has been transformed into an extraordinary event area for the 360° panorama exhibition.

The former gas storage facility has been transformed into an extraordinary event area through a completely new interior design. A steel construction with a height of around 35 m (115 ft) and a diameter of 40  (114.8 ft) was built on top of a massive ground floor with a height of approximately 6 m (20 ft). Since the end of 2014, the 360° panoramas of the Berlin artist Asisi have been exhibited inside the building.

Construction

18 radially moving truss girders, which are connected by a compression ring at the ridge and a tension ring at the upper and lower chords, form the main structure of the roof. Pressure tubes and diagonals arranged around it form the roof panel.

The primary structure of the facade is made up of 18 bracket and facade supports, which are arranged in a grid of 10°. The stiffening of the cylinder is guaranteed by the arrangement of horizontal ring stiffeners in connection with compression and tensile-rigid diagonals.

To be able to determine the unevenly distributed wind load as realistically as possible, the entire main structure was modeled spatially with RFEM.
