Stability Optimization of Steel Frame Structure for Modular Units

CBZ located at Zutendaal, part of Warsco Units, is a construction company that produces modular units. The purpose of this master's thesis is to dimension and optimise the steel frame of such units according to a new concept.

The units are manufactured to extreme measures which apply exceptional transport. The financial cost that this entails limited Warsco Units to participate in the international market. By making the units disassembled it yet can offer a solution. For this, CBZ chooses its own production of cold‑formed thin‑walled sections and the welded joints are replaced by bolts.

To produce the units according to the new concept, the profiles should be calculated based on the European standard EN 1993‑1‑3. For the calculations in this master's thesis, the finite element software RFEM is chosen. As a result, a unit that meets all the standards and requirements is obtained.
