Analysis of Bridge Insertion of Steel Box Girder

Since the incremental launching process was applied for the patent more than 40 years ago, this bridge construction method has developed into an efficient production process. In the case of steel and composite steel bridges, high support forces have to be introduced into the mostly slender web plates. However, due to the moving point of application of the support loads, it is not possible to arrange transverse stiffeners at all required locations. Instead, an attempt is made to consider the load-increasing influence of the existing longitudinal stiffeners.

The objective of the thesis is to present the current status of the design methods for the introduction of support forces during for the bridge insertion on the basis of a currently built bridge structure. The design of the present bridge was carried out according to DIN 18800 and is to be compared with the possibilities of Eurocode 3 as well as the current design concepts of Davaine and Seitz.
