On the Mediterranean island of Formentera, a new cross-laminated timber building was constructed which is used by a sailing school and a water sports center. The one-story building consists of two separate parts that are connected by low-lying glued-laminated beams in the roof area.

Two 9 and 6-story residential buildings which include 56 units in total, are the first in France to be certified passive at the height of 9 stories. They are located in seismic zone 4 in the heart of Grenoble’s Flaubert eco-neighborhood. The buildings, constructed with 52,972 ft3 of zinc-coated wood, are both an architectural masterpiece and an innovative achievement to inspire housing sustainability for the next decade.

In 2018, Alì Supermercati decided to extend the existing regional commercial network with a new shopping mall located in Via Noalese, Treviso, Italy. The project, designed by Studio Signorotto Architettura of Treviso, includes a glued-laminated timber roof which integrates with the area’s existing wood structures characterized by a perfect aesthetic design and quality building material.

Haus Gables, a new ground-up residential project designed and developed by architectural designer Jennifer Bonner, director of MALL, has recently completed construction in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood of Atlanta, Georgia.

The recent trend in high-rise construction is clearly dominated by timber as the most ecological and environmentally friendly material. The project promoter Nexity Resolutely is committed to constructive building solutions with a reduced carbon footprint through various labels and certifications included in their several office and commercial timber projects.

Among these is the Palazzo Meridia which is currently the tallest CLT office building in France. The Dlubal customer CBS-Lifteam was responsible for the planning, supply and installation of the timber structure.

A unique installation, Conversation Plinth is a collaboration between IKD, a Boston-based architectural design firm, Bensonwood, SMARTLAM, the first CLT manufacturer in the US, and Clemson University’s Wood Utilization and Design Institute.

One of five Exhibit Columbus winners of the J. Irwin and Xenia S. Miller prize, Conversation Plinth is designed to generate conversation around the use of hardwood CLTs in US construction. While softwood CLTs have been used in North America in the construction of mid-to-high-rise buildings, the hardwood variety has only been available in Europe.

Todays’ design methods and fabrication techniques of CLT panels allow for easier design and construction of high‑rise timber buildings.

“Îlot bois de Strasbourg” is one of the first CLT building project in France that exceeds 98 ft in height. This building complex consisting of three high‑rise buildings provides commercial space on the ground floor and 146 residential units on the upper floors. The entire structure has a total area of 100,104 ft².
