Centers of Mass and Rigidity in RFEM 6
Technical Article
RFEM 6 offers you the Building Model add-on for defining a building by means of stories. It is an advantageous tool for modeling, given that the stories can be adjusted in many ways afterwards.
Some of its most important features are:
- Consideration and display of story masses
- Listing structural elements and information about them
- Automatic creation of result sections on shear walls
- Output of section resultants in global direction for determining shear forces
- Tabular and graphical output of results by story (for example, story actions, interstory drift, forces in shear walls)
In addition to the above-mentioned features, the Building Model add-on has been enhanced with one important advantage: calculating the center of mass and center of rigidity. This information is available under Static Analysis or Spectral Analysis when displaying the results for each story in the tables (that is, by displaying “Results by Story” in the tables). In the "Centers of Mass and Rigidity" tab, the table lists the masses of each story, the associated center of mass, the cumulative mass and its center, and the center of rigidity, as shown in Image 3. You can also display the center of stiffness graphically, by clicking into the table. However, please note that the center of stiffness is only calculated in case of a rigid diaphragm.
