Loading of Railway Bridge Subjected to Railway Traffic and Seismic Actions

Railway bridges are particularly complex engineering structures that allow for spanning very wide valleys with railways. The bridges must be designed and built while taking into account numerous boundary conditions. In addition to the forces due to the train crossings, they must also safely absorb forces due to natural loads.

Particularly problematic is the design of railway bridges in seismic areas, such as in the region around the Turkish city of Istanbul, since these extreme stresses have to be taken into account as well.

Particularly problematic is the design of railway bridges in seismic areas, such as in the region around the Turkish city of Istanbul, since these extreme stresses have to be taken into account as well.

The objective is to calculate the vibration behavior of a bridge subjected to traffic and seismic loads, assuming that the selected bridge type would be located in the vicinity of Istanbul. In particular, Guideline 804 "Railway Bridges" should be applied. Furthermore, the regulations of the DIN technical reports 101 (actions on bridges) and 103 (steel bridges) must be observed. An FE model is created to calculate the bridge.
