Insights from the Study:
- The strategic placement of a reinforced concrete core near the center of mass of the irregular L shaped, lightweight composite steel frame mitigates torsional deformations and improves the building's overall seismic response, while maintaining the low structural self-weight and cost efficiency achieved by using steel and composite sections for the rest of the structure.
- To satisfy the 90 minute fire resistance rating required for diagnostic centers, the structural system is engineered according to Eurocodes, in order to withstand the high compressive forces arising from restrained thermal expansion. These forces are successfully mitigated through the application of sprayed fire resistive coatings with specific calculated thicknesses, thereby ensuring the structural stability of the steel sections under extreme fire conditions.
- Facade engineering of large structural glass surfaces to German DIN standards utilizes interlayer shear stiffness and composite action to offer optimal safety against peak wind pressures.
- An independent floating slab supported by elastomeric bearings successfully isolates footfall and ambient vibrations, protecting the sensitive equipment of the MRI suite to ensure the high image quality required for precise body imaging.
