Slenderness

The result tables of the category Slendernesses are deactivated by preset. However, you can activate them at any time in the Result Table Manager.

In the tables, the slendernesses λ of the designed objects are specified for both major axes. Members of the 'Tension Member' or 'Cable' type are hidden.

Some design standards recommend complying with limit slendernesses regardless of the utilization of the stability analysis. The slenderness for flexural buckling is calculated from the ratio of effective length to radius of inertia.

The calculation considers the Effective Lengths assigned to the objects. If no effective length is assigned, the member length is applied. A corresponding note can be found in the comment column.

The slendernesses are compared with the limit values λlim stored in the Global Settings. If the slenderness is greater than the limit value, the value is highlighted in red.

Important

Checking the slenderness does not represent a design in the actual sense, because the slenderness is considered in the stability analyses. For standards such as EN 1995 [1], the cross-section check is also sufficient if certain limit values of the slenderness are met.

Checking the slendernesses is not part of the result tables Utilizations on Members. The table Overview also does not output any exceedances of the limit values.
