In the SHAPE‑THIN cross-section properties software, a point element is a small object that can be used to display irregularities in the cross-section geometry.
Point elements are taken into account when calculating the cross-section properties. Their proportion should not be too great in order to ensure the validity of the theory of thin-walled cross-sections.
The analytical calculation of the torsion moment of inertia does not include the point elements. Also, no stresses are determined for point elements.
Types of Point Elements
Four types of point elements are available in the menu "Insert" → "Cross-Section Data" → "Point Elements:
- Rounding
- Rectangle
- Circle
- Triangle
It is possible to set the point elements graphically at snap points of a cross-section.
