There is a risk of sliding if the design value of the force H_d acting parallel to this surface in the direction of displacement is greater than the design values of the resistance to sliding R_s,d. Therefore, it is necessary to check that the following condition is fulfilled:

H_{d} \leq R_{s, d}

In the drained state, the design value of the shear resistance must be calculated using the design value of the soil friction angle:

R_{d} = {V^{'}}_{d} \cdot \tan δ_{d}

In the undrained state, the calculated base area A′ is calculated. The design value of the cohesion in the undrained state c_u,d is used to determine the design value of the shear resistance:

R_{d} = A^{'} \cdot c_{u, d}
