Solid mesh refinements affect the generation of the FE mesh. This way, you can achieve an adjusted discretization for solids with small dimensions. Conversely, for solids that play a minor role in the analysis, you can define a "refinement" with a larger mesh size than the globally targeted FE mesh length.
